I am beginning to get parts together to build a sump/fuge. I have looked at a lot of pictures online and noticed there are a lot of ways to filter the overflow into the sump. I know filter socks are very popular. I also have noticed many people do not use a filter at all. My current setup runs out on a piece of eggcrate that has filter material laying on top. Please weigh in with your opinions as to if a filter is needed at all and if so what type and why.

Thank you

I do not use any kind of filter in my sump. I have a 3 stage system. I have a dual overflow one side goes into my skimmer the other goes into my 20g fuge. Both the skimmer and the sump dump into my sump/return tank. I have at times put filter socks on the drain lines at that point but only when I'm doing something in the tank that stirs up a lot of debris.
