I am planning a 55gal with LR & DSB with about 4 fish and was wondering if a sump is a must. I dont have room for one and I am also afraid my child will be messing with it and that is why I was wondering if it is a necessity? Thanks...

It is not an aboslute necessity, but it is beneficial and gives you a place to put your equipment that is out of site and easy for servicing. It will also increase your actual water volume, which gives a little cushion for fluctuating water parameters. However there are lots of successful tanks that do not incorporate a sump ;)
