sump question

i have read various sump "setting up" websites but i still dont understand how you make sure that your are pumping back in the tank the exact amount you are taking out. because if i siphon the water out faster than the pump goes, the sump overflows. if i pump faster than the siphon goes i overflow the tank? some advise please?

ok so i figured it out now with the overflow box and everything. how big does an overflow box have to be? it costs almost $100 for an overflow box that would allow 1000 gph to run through and i'm sure i can make one for MUCH cheaper. anyone know hwo big it would have to be?
