I've been toying with the idea of consolidating my 29g biocube and my 20g rimless into a 60g rimless cube tank. :) I have 6 tanks now and the more I think about it the more I want to streamline the operation lol. Most people want to ADD more tanks but I think I can be happy with 5 tanks.

Some issues though with the proposed plan. One is I wouldnt be able to buy the new tank until I sell my biocube which means I would have to house 6 extra fish in my 20g. This would severely overstock the tank. :-( I was thinking I could keep the fish in the cube til the last possible moment adn when the tank setup sells then move them over. So maybe 2 weeks in the overcrowded 20g until I could get the 60g up and ready.

I would like to make the 60g a major coral tank with mostly micro fish. The 60g would allow me to really go to town with corals due to the huge footprint it has. :) I also could add a bunch more of tiny fish to it which is also appealing. The biggest fish in the tank would be my 2 b&w perculas and a citron goby. My mandarin and scooter stay relatively small as does my yellow watchman and firefish. The 20g has all tiny fish already in it.

I would add a homemade sump out of a 20g tank which will "just" fit underneath the stand. I've been eying this 60g cube for a few weeks now. lol It's $449 for drilled tank and stand. The only other thing is the lighting. I would like to go with a single LED fixture if I move ahead with this but with the 24" depth not sure which one would work. Or if I could find one a 6 bulb t5.

What do you guys think? Throw some opinions at me to help me decide. :-D

The other option is to NOT save up for an APEX controller for my 125g reef and use that $300-$350 to buy the new tank instead. I planned on putting the controller on layaway after I get my 55g setup sold which would pay for more than half of the controller or the 60g cube setup. ;-)

Thanks for reading this all, I appreciate it!

IMO, forget the APEX, get the 60g, and use the money you get for the bio and 20g for the APEX later. Always better to have healthy, safe fish, rather then over crowded, stressed fish.

Actually, as it stands now the two tanks are pretty good as far as stocking so none are stressed now. If I had to house them all in one tank while I build the 60g then I'd have some issues. lol

Just getting to be a bit much with all the tanks to test and maintain. Plus the bigger tanks are easier than the smaller ones. :) I'd also like to reclaim some of my living space in the house. lol We're also planning on upgrading both 125g tanks to either 180's or 220's some time next year. Alot going on in Careyland as far as fish tanks are concerned. hehe....

So your vote is to go with the tank setup before the apex. Duly noted, and probably the best answer. The controller would be SOO cool to have though.

LOL... I know. Just looked it up. I'm a gadget guy, so I would want it too. But in the short or long run, I think the fish would be better off in the 60g. Gives you less pressure and stress of getting rid of the other 2 tanks.

Very true.

Thanks for the feedback, it's nice to be able to bounce ideas off other people. :-D

I know on local forums around here there are people looking to downsize and take a smaller cube in exchange for partial payment on a larger tank. But I know a larger tank is easier than a smaller one so go for the larger one.

Thanks Joy. :) I've seen a few ads here and there like that locally so I'll keep a look out.

I agree with Kio, for me, as much as I want an Apex, I would use the money to get the 60 and get it setup first, rather than putting all the fish in the 20, even for a couple weeks. You really never know when "Murphy" will come around. "If it can go wrong, it will."

Plus, just imagine if during the (2) weeks the fish stress and someone picks up some ich. That might just be a problem. :)

Very good point. I only have a 25g Qt as well so it would be 11 fish in there if they did get iched up.

I'm kinda really leaning towards the setup vs the controller now. You guys have made some valid points. :)

Not sure if this is off topic, but if I were to go with the 60g cube what would you guys use to light it and filter it? I started a new thread under equipment about the lights, if you can help me out here or there that's be great.

I planned on a berlin sump made out if a 20g tank, with a good skimmer but no refugium because of the limited space. Think that's be enough filtration for a full reef tank? Even with some sps in it?

I don't think a 4 bulb will do it though. Thats part of my concern. And for the price of that fixture I can get LED's I would think.

I've been doing some reading up on LED's and was wondering if I don't want some red in the spectrum for better coral growth.

That ecoxotic fixture is for a canopy and I don't have one. lol I plan on hanging it above the tank.:) It also didn't list any wattage for the bulbs but what i did like is it's dimmable version is compatible with the controllers I've been looking at.

I would go for the 60g tank and not the controller. Just my opinion, as you know I enjoy following new builds! lol.
