I think the 46 is good for now. You already have it and like you said you can just transfer all of the rock into a bigger tank when you get it. You can easily do salt, especially with all your fw experience. I went straight to salt, its just a matter of reading and asking what needs to be done.

True...I tend to obsess and make things harder than they need to be...but ultimately learning new things is really a thrill for me. I guess that is part of the allure of a reef tank in the future.....SO much there to learn.

I love that the internet has lead me to such a helpful and knowledgable bunch of people. It really gives me the confidence to do this. The fish alone are so expensive in SW compared to FW (with the exception of Discus) that it was a bit intimidating...but I am feeling better about it everyday.
