Top for new tank Do I need glass tops if I build a hood?

I have to figure out the lighting for my new tank...

I plan on buiding a wooden hood with internal lights.

Do I need to have glass tops? Then the hood?

6-8 inches *should* be fine. A glass top will slow down your evap. rate, but it will also trap heat if you're using hot lights, and deflect some of the light you're trying to get into the tank. Just make sure your lights are high enough they won't get splashed with water and you'll be fine.

So I won't be getting glass covers then...

I will be building the top, so I can make it as high as I want.

Don't I want to slow the evap rate down??

This doesn't really matter IMO.

If the glass covers the tank, you will more than likely have pH/heat issues. This will restrict the surface ripple needed for gas exchange for a stable pH.

Splashing SW will cause rust, so as theedudenator, stated, make sure that won't happen.
