Ok so when I picked up this 55, this guy gave me a bunch of old substrate Im unsure of what he called it but I think he said it was Aragonite.

Can anyone help me with this? He claimed it was used in a cichlid tank.

So my question is What is it and would it be safe to use it in a FOWLR tank, slowly transforming to a reef? I was planing to use about a inch maybe little more, and topped off with 2 inches of sand? Is it a bad idea to use it being frmm a cichlid tank? If not How should I go about cleaning it?

Im no expert at the topic. It would be safe to use provided you rinse it well. Personally, I wouldn't recommend such a corse material to be used.

Aragonite is essentially crushed coral and is safe from a chemical standpoint, however it is a little too coarse for anything that sifts or burrows.
