upgrading lighting

I'd like to upgrade my lighting to something suitable for inverts. I don't know how to go about chosing a fixture/bulb, nor do i know what all the lighting terms mean (HO, fluorescent, etc).

Right now i've got the regular bulbs that usually come in a fish tank kit, 24inches long, 1" diameter, says "Aquarium lamp 17Watt"

So do i need a new bulb (fixture houses only one) or a whole new fixture? and what are my options?

brittlestar, yellow wrasse, and 2 cleaner shrimp

Inverts do not need special lighting. Coral and anemones do however. If you are getting coral, you'll definitely want good lighting. If anything, i would advise to look for T5 HO lighting for 30G tanks. T5 HO's are great lights, and are cheap compared to metal halide fixture. Still, you could go with a metal halide pendant since all you have is a 30G. May be a bit more costly, but if you want tons of coral down the road, it would be worth it. I would still look in to the T5 HO's.

If by inverts you just mean shrimp and little critters, what you have is just fine.
