UV sterilizer

What's peoples opinions of these, are they a good addition to stave off the dreaded ich?!

Only if the ich passes through it. But I've seen positive and negative reviews on the forum.

Thanks for the quick reply, could people give positives and negatives and how long a day should I have it running? (should I purchase one!)

I have one that's built into my canister. When I first got it, it cleared up a bacterial bloom within hours. So I thought 'wow, this thing is awesome!' and left it on all the time. Then about a month ago I went to clean my filter and found water in the light tube. It's been off ever since and I haven't seen any change in my tank at all.
