Uv sterilizer light or not?

I have a 50 gallon tank and am a newbie to saltwater only 3 months, I've heard nothing short of a 6feet bulb would get rid of unwanted parasites although algae it kills.
What are your guys thoughts on should I get one or not?
Note that I have urchins, snails & starfish so would it kill their food?

IMO they are a waste of money...Many people use them and love them...
I just don't see their usefulness
