You can, just clean the bioball once in a while. If used for noise control, no need to allow buildup.

You can get rid of them with a good amount of LR. Bioballs tend to accumulate a lot of wastes, algae and such. This will traps more of the same and allow nitrates to colonize and accumulate at this point is your system.
Some will tell you to clean the bioballs, but that just kills off some of your good biological filter.
LR is the best medium.
The wet/dry is just like a fuge, if set up correctly. Or at the very least, it adds more water volume to your system..and thats a good thing.
