What is a sump?

Would someone mind explaining the purpose of a sump? What about a refugium?

I spose its just another tank u pump ur water into, filter it, heat it, uv whatever, and then pump back into ur main tank..
Refugium mostly a part of the sump, place to grow live rocks, i spose plants, also helps with filtration to run water through alot of LR, put all ur hardware into the sump to keep ur tank clutter free.
it could be explained better, i'm sure many will get a bit more into it..

DeFeKt, you explained it in laymens terms for me, perfect! I could understand it. Pghjeff71, I found lots of info at the link provided , plus lots of info on other stuff I would need to know.

Guess I will be setting up a sump soon!

Okay, I'm new, so I have to "act new" for a minute... I LOVE this site! I've posted all of four items in the last couple days and gotten more info from more people than from all my fish store contacts in the last month. I'll definately recommend the site! THANKS!
