what is your preferred live sand

I used both Carib Sea and Natures Ocean. Both are good. Honestly I would get whichever one is a better deal. Check out drsfostersmith.com and look at 40lbs bag if that's how much you need.

I'm leaning toward the ocean direct original grade sand.

My favorite LS is a bag of dry aragonite sand with a few cups of LS added from someone's established saltwater tank. Much easier on the pocketbook, much more life for your dollar, and no issues with nutrients cause you aren't adding a bunch of dead organic matter to your tank from the beginning.
