Whats the benefit of a protein skimmer

Stupid question... but what benefit does haveing a proein skimmer have.

That will do it. The short version is that it pulls out a variety of things...Fish poop, organic wastes, primary and secondary amines, some amino sugars...alcohols, fatty acid. They are called DOC's..these the bproducts of processed biological materials. In other words...it pulls the junk out of the water.
