I am starting a 100gal reef. If I start cycle with 40lbs. base rock and 40lbs with LR with only coraline, will the cycle (amonia spike) kill off the coraline?

It will kill some of it, but it will easily come back over time given that you put enough light over the tank...

:)

This brings up another subject. I've heard the purple coraline doesn't like too much light, but the red and pink does. However ever tank I've ever seen is covered in purple coraline and has as much light being generated as a Las vegas casino. I will have (2) 250W MH 10k and (2) 96W Actinic 03 CF, will this be sufficient, hope so since I've already purchased them.

What else do you plan on putting in your tank? I would think your lighting is more than sufficient.

I wonder if this is more of a "rule of thumb" more than it is a an absolute. My LR is totally covered in purple coralline. This is with running a 250w MH and 2X55 03 PC's. I consider that a pretty good amount of light over my 40 gallon. :)

Today when I was looking at it with the lights off, I noticed that I have some pink and red coralline popping up. To me, it is much prettier than the purple. I hope it really begins to take off.

well when i got my lighting upgrade i fist saw purple all over then green came and i really did not like that color but now pink is growing all over the glass and the rock. all of the snails have pink all over there shells and the hermits are slowly getting pin on there shells too. but the pink is much coolor then the purple i think.

I would like to have both as well.
Tank is 100gal 51" Wide and 36" Tall. Mainly polyps, shrooms at bottom, every ricordia, and some SPS. Maybe a goby or two at most. 150 LBS LR. Don't want to go to 400W. Does this sound OK? Have a FW to satisfy my need for finned friends.
