Thanks for all the info. A portion of the sump I mentioned will be a fuge, I'll be most likely doing something similiar to the Model F from melev's reef page. But, I'm a little disappointed that won't be sufficient. Again, I wasn't planning to get a mandarin right away, but was hopeful there was a way to help sustain it 6 months in or so. I'll continue to research on it, in no way do I intend to get something I can't support. I just really want one!

As far as curing the LR in the tank, won't there a strong smell from the die-off from the LR?

I used the raw shrimp in my 125 and there was no smell at all. It seems the smaller tanks tend to smell....like 55G and below (I got this just from reading posts on this site, so I could be totally off).

I cured liverock in my tank AFTER I let it cure in a tub for a few days. The initial water is NASTY. After you scrub a few times and get all the nasties off, that is when I would add it to the tank, if that is the way you wish to go, that is. No it didn't stink that much after I did the above.

I'm super proud of you for going reef, btw. yaaaaaay!

Well I am very pleased to be reading this and I feel no guilt in putting the SW bug in you and your wife's ear!! With that said...

You and I need to get together. I told you if you did a SW tank that I would help you along the way and I will. You will be happier with your tank if you go with the MH lighting, coral growth will be more accelerated and you will get that shimmer that makes a SW tank look awesome. I would suggest the dual 175s over the single 250 because of the center brace. The only thing there is you are going to be generating a lot of heat on a small tank. You will need a canopy to house the lighting and really good air movement to keep that heat out. If you are wanting to build something similar to my stand let me know and I will help you out. Oh and I totally agree with Joe about drilling the tank. You don't even have to buy a bit I have one that will drill a hole for a 1" bulkhead. Let me know when you are ready and I'll bring it and help you there too.

Anyway, I'm very glad to see you are taking the plunge! Welcome to the darkside!

You guys are awesome! I know you're all disappointed it's not the 125, but I got scared. lol

Allen, I totally intend on taking you up on your offer to help. I think I do want to mimic something similiar to your stand, since this tank is up in the living room I think I'll prefer to have a canopy on it, if we can get over the heating issues.

I have 3 fish left in the 46, that a member from the local club is hopefully picking up this week, then the tank will be free. I intend by the end of the week to have the LR and/or BR on order so it can start curing while we're working the stand and lighting stuff out.

DT, what you said is pretty much what I was thinking I'd do. Thats good to know about your experience and that it meets what I was anticipating.

Maybe for our next local meet we should have it at my house, with power tools and a "stand building demonstration" and tank setup class.

If you are going to use MHs (DIY kits) then you will need a canopy. If you are going to use DE (double ended bulbs) then you could get pendants and not have the canopy. If you don't have the equipment to build the stand we can do it at my house if you want. I have everything needed to build just about anything. If you want to mimic my stand exactly I enough oak to make it happen.

If it were me I would buy base rock and seed it with a few nice peices of LR. BRK as some nice peices and may have some base rock too. When the time comes for your fuge don't buy any macro I need to empty some of mine out and you can have it!
