It could be the wood. My water is soft with a very low GH/KH and wood plummets my PH for a while. If you wanted to check you could remove the wood and soak it in a bucket for a couple of days and check PH in the bucket; if the PH drops then it's the wood.

I was wondering....In this tank...I have sand .....could i not simply empty the contents of the mesh bag onto the sand?same colour? plus...i have learnt since it just releases what it needs to into the tank......then becomes ...well...dead....then needs replacing in 4/6 months....my ph is now 7.2??
 
I think it will work better being left in the water flow. I don't think it would be a good idea to add it onto the substrate. When your ph begins to fall you know to replace it.
