Why do people usually say angelfish need a taller tank as opposed to a wider one?

>30 gallons is all I would say ;)

Dimensions (within reason of course) are not crazy important. Angelfish aren't crazy fast and active swimmers, so length is of less importance with them.

Because a good quality Angelfish can be 8"-10" or more tall so a 12" tall tank is not the best for them. Many of today's Angels have burnt off dorsal and anal fins or have been selectively bred to have rounder fins than longer so they don't appear so tall. Check out this fish to see my points ;) Aquarium Advice - Aquarium Forum Community - Andy Sager's Album: New Angelfish - Picture
This fish ( is my avatar fish) needed a 20 gal high for the height of the tank opposed to a 20 gal long to keep those nice fins. Back in the 1960s, I imported a pair of Gold veil Angelfish that were too tall for a 20 gal high tank.
So now you can see why taller is better for better finnage on an Angelfish. (y)
