any old sponge in the canister?

I have the sunsun 3-tiered canister filters for my 75 and am about to start the tank cycling, but I only have two tiers full. I have the sponge media that came with them on one level and bioballs on top of that. For my third tier can I take any dense/fine sponge from Smart and Final and cut them to size? I'd actually probably put this tier in the middle so the bioballs were on top/last.

Thoughts?

i dont see why not, i often use custom made stuff for my aquaclear filters just because it is cheaper

I guess I'd also like to put in a silicate removing media since I've chosen to use silica sand as my substrate. Any recommendations on a silicate filter brand?
