calcium carbonate sand?

I was in the LFS today (PetSmart) and saw they had a bunch of sand in the reptile section that says it's calcium carbonate, and claims that it's better than regular silica sand.

I was pretty interested in it, because it's something like $9 for a 10 lb. bag and they have nice-looking white sand and a pretty cool dark purple version, too. Seems like it might be what I want for my new 5.5 gal. nightstand tank.

I was just wondering what the deal is with the calcium carbonate. Is it actually a good thing? Is it suitable for fish? Would I be better off with PFS or regular gravel instead?

Thanks!

It will raise your KH and therefore your PH.

be wary of dyed reptile sand as it may leech dye into your H2O

Well that's no good. My pH is high enough.

Then again, this is a new tank, so I have no idea what my PH will be. Would the CC sand really make things out of control? My main tank has a PH in the upper 7's, so it might be good to keep the parameters similar if I shuffle anybody around.
