I just bought a 45 gallon tank and bought Black Aquarium Gravel, I can not get the rocks to run clean. I ran the rocks through a stainer then I did the bucket thing...still no luck, then I added a purifier NOTHING! Now I'm draining the tank and sifting the sand but it is not coming clean, and the water is black and cloudy...any suggestions?????
Thanks! |

Gee it sounds like the dye on the rocks is running. I'd imagine, as with any other dyed object that has dye that is running, it's just a matter of shear quantity of water and time. Have a spare bathtub? I'd maybe try spreading the gravel across the bottom of the tub, filling it, and letting it sit and soak.

I wouldn't think that any aquarium substrate should run! I'd hate to have chemicals leaching into the tank!
What kind of gravel is it ... size, type ..... If it is colour coated, it should be epoxy covered & not run. I wouldn't use it if it is truly running. If you have black sand (or things like ecocomplete) .... then you would need to rinse out the fine particles. Even then, the water would cloud up when first filled. You best bet would be to wait a few days for the fines to settle.
