Was recently at a aquarium shop and the owner Tryed to sell me conditioning salts which contained trace elements.there were all different formulas based on the fish and I was just wondering if these are useful or needed?

In general, no. However, depending on what fish we are talking about, the tank's natural parameters, and the exact salt they can be beneficial. The only example in most cases are rift lake cichlids. They come from the hardest bodies of freshwater in the world and like their water in our tanks to be the same. They will breed without it, but IME they do a little better if you add the special cichlid lake salts.

If you have goldfish you should have some aquarium salt on hand, they respond particularly well to salt when anything is wrong.
