cycling and nitrate levels

I'm on my third day of cycling my 40 gal. Right now the ammonia is 0ppm, nitrite is .25ppm and nitrate is at least 10ppm (color is between 10 and 20ppm). Isn't it supposed to take forever for nitrate to show up? Is it possible to have too much nitrate in a tank? Are the nitrite levels dangerous? Should I do a water change?
So many questions!

i think when its above 40 you should do a water change. 10-20 nitrates is i think the norm

my water comes out the tap with 6ppm... 10 is nothing
