You definitely need a filter to build up bacteria, but a heater is not necessary even tho the can speed up the cycle process. :)
 
Yes, because the bacteria live in the filter. And a temp of 85ish will speed up the cycle, so a heater helps.
 
Filter, yes! This is where your beneficial bacteria will be or you colonies of BB.As for the Heater no & yes. If your water is very cold, yes. When I first started i used a heater & had the temps at 85. From reading it said this will help kick start the beneficial bacteria at this temp. When I started my 2nd aquarium I didnt use the heater & temps where about 77-78 I believe.

What filter media are you using? Do you have an API master kit? What is your source for ammonia? How big is your aquarium? What are yo using as a dechlorinator?
