What do people mean drift wood in their fish tank please help out? :/

It's a piece of wood that people use to make their aquarium look nice and natural.

So do I go out and find a piece of wood and just put it in my tank? Or buy something?

Either. If you collect wood you need to make sure it's not rotting or green. Avoid evergreens because if the large amounts if sap. Bake it in the sun, boil it or put it through the dishwater (no soap!) to kill nasties. Soak it to leech tannins and water log. Hard wood is better than softer woods. It lasts longer.

+1 to this! My DW is from an oak tree I found out at a local park. I soaked it until it sank on its own (frequent water changes of course). The boiled it for 2-3 hours. Cheapest DIY ever especially since store bought DW is sooo expensive. A

If it's shrimp I don't think it would matter but the look or real dw beats fake for sure. Plus paint will chip and fade after a bit.
