External filter question

On a canister filter if you turn the output tap to say 50% and the in tap turned to 100% would it course it to leak, I had a canister filter and took it out because it was leaking from one of the hinges, just make me think as it was mentioned in a different post

It's an aqua one 1050

Could cause back pressure inside the filter as you are only allowing half the flow out that is being forced in?
