I just started my first fishless cycle...you can get ammonia in any department store that carries cleaning products, although it won't be pure ammonia.
The ammonia I'm ussing is called Goldex ammonia (only 5% ammonia, 95% water). Just make sure it says nothings added like colors or phophates. I think someone else already mentioned this, but if you're unsure of any additives shake it up and see if it bubbles for more then a second. And DO NOT attempt to smell for any fragrance. I made the mistake of testing to see if it smelled like lemony fresh or some house cleaner, good god 8O , almost passed out.
Here's the recipe I'm following http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/misc/fishlesscycling.html.
Also I'd suggest you get some gravel from an established tank, a fish store could be risky for diseases but it might be a safer bet if your other tank has ick.
Gravel from an established tank will help it cycle faster then the normal time of 4-6 weeks. I added gravel from my 10 gal, I'm on my 9th day and the ammonia cycle finished on day 6.
Goodluck
