So I've recently found out that a lot of the things I believed about keeping goldfish are wrong, and I've been doing my best to rectify the mistakes I've made. I have brought a new 90 litre tank, filter, and some live plants (it's all cycled and my fish much happier in there than he was before).

I have one comet goldfish who is several years old and around 8cm long. I've been looking around and there seems to be a general consensus that goldfish are social and work best with other goldfish? This would be fine except I don't think my tank is big enough for two goldfish and I really can't afford to get a larger one at the moment.

Would it be better to leave my goldfish alone or to risk putting in another species such as Red Minnows or Zebra Danios?

I would also appreciate any advice regarding natural ornaments as there is a lot of conflicting information on what is appropriate, and I would prefer not to have any plastic or poly-resin in the tank if possible.

Hi there... from personal research, and asking specialists I ended up putting a weather loach in my tank with 5 danios and the comet goldfish which was already there. As long as I give regular water changes for the loach.. I’ve been told it’s fine... all seem really happy, had for 3 weeks now.

Hello Rebecca...

Goldfish are cold blooded and putting topical fish in with Goldfish is a very bad idea. Tropical fish are warm blooded and used to warmer water. As you know Goldfish get much larger than tropicals and you don't want the tropicals to end up as lunch for the Goldfish. Goldfish are fine alone, just keep their water super clean with lots of large, frequent water changes.
