We did it!
Thank you to everyone who gave me advice about starting and maintaining the 5-gallon tank we got for our daughter. As you know, the first two tries (total four fish) were a disaster.
After following your advice, we got the water to level out, with no ammonia and medium-high nitrite. I finally got some "good" bacteria going in the tank and we purchased two black tetras three weeks ago.
I am very happy to report that they are alive and well!
