What wattage would a heater need for a 30 gallon tank?

I'd say 150 watts. They do up to 40G tanks.

Yeah you might get away with 100w but 150 would be better.

It somewhat depends on the brand, when I needed a 2nd heater I bought an Eheim 150w that stated up to 70g or slightly bigger. I found that when i switched to the canister filter on my 46g the one 150w wasn't maintaining my water temp where I wanted it so I added the 2nd heater, one is an Aqueon & the other an Eheim. My water temp is perfect now.
