laterite under sand?

I'm replacing my substrate and wondered if it would be beneficial to my plants to put a layer of laterite down before the sand. I already have both so it won't cost me either way. I can't afford Eco-Complete like I would want right now so that is not an option. I use liquid ferts and root tabs etc but just wondered about any thoughts on laterite and sand.

im using the Florite sub under my sand and dispite what many say my anubius seems to have rooted into it and are doing quite well, so perhaps id recommend the florite : )
