It's rock that's live... duh!

Just means the rock has been in an established aquarium or directly from the ocean and is loaded with beneficial bacteria (along with a host of hitchhikers usually)

IME, live rock should only be used in saltwater aquariums, as it is taken from the ocean. The rock itself isn't a live, but it has micro and macro organisms that are alive inside it. Same with live sand. In freshwater, just use plants.
