I went the pet store today and was told that a female and male betta can live together. I already have a male so I got a small female. Male did first start to chase her but has since just ignored her. Is this okay or will he still try kill her??

It's a bad idea. The females will generally get harassed to death by the males sadly. They should only be put together for a short time for breeding purposes.

+1. Bettas are very unpredicatble fish. Some males will be peaceful and possibly a bit more tolerant of females but there would still be some harassment. I had a male betta that was very aggressive and killed any female that I added to his tank.
