Absolutely. I am a firm believer in "fishless cycling." Aside from being more humane, it it far more forgiving if and when mistakes are made, (and they will be made by all of us). It also gives more leaveway to accelarate the process without harm. In addition, it will enable you to create a bioload sufficient to initially add more fish offering less stress for them. There are many great articles on this process and it actually is not difficult.
Look at it this way: You wouldn't think of bringing home a new kitten and locking it in a closet with a litter box, forcing it to live in it's own waste. That is what happens when using fish to cycle, and although not impossible, is very difficult to control without loss.
Part of this great hobby, IMO, is to provide a healthy and hopefully happy enviornment for our finned friends, one they might not otherwise experience in the wild, and if done properly, will repay us with hours, days and years of joy.
Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for advice. This is a great forum for that.
