new 5g

I just received a used 5g from my girlfriends mom. I was thinking this could be a fry tank or shrimp tank. If it would be a fry tank what do I need? Should I get gravel or have it bare bottomed? I'm sure a Airstone and what about a filter?

My fry tank as all the things as a usual tank would have:filter ,heater etc. I just put nylon over filter.

Agreed, or sponge. Fry tank i would leave with no substrate...easier.

Filters water and all but doesn't suck/kill your fish.

Well what powers it or do they just sit in the tank?

You put an air stone down the middle. As the bubbles rise they take water with them. New water is then pulled through the sponge out the top.
