Filtering the change water with peat sounds like a good idea to try and see how effective it would be. I understand your concerns on dropping the pH too quickly. It can be just as bad as it going down too much. There is the Java moss alternative and being it's more plant than 'dirt', may help ease those worries.

We, as a people, know so much more about outer space than we do about our own oceans. This lack of knowledge can very well spell the dangers that lay in wait for us.

The oceans surely would swallow us before a rock comes down to smite the planet of it's life.
