new sand

I'm new to using sand and decided to set it up with my new tank. I washed it thoroughly and was careful. I ran into only one problem.... How do you get the sand to even out once you put it in? I got more sand in some places then others. I tried moving it with my hand but it's hard to see what I'm doing when the tanks high up on a stand.
