I would say fish-less. I'm currently cycling mine and I think its definitely the way to go. What size tank do you have?

I have a 20 now that i jumped into but im getting a 55 soon

Here's how I did my cycle, and it cycled in two weeks
First, you have to make sure that you get the heater and the filter in
Then get your API master test kit so you can be testing the water at least twice a week
Full the tank in and let the filter run for at least 2 Hours
Then, go get. Used filter media, go ask your LFS for a used filter media, this has the live bacteria to speed up your cycle
Go grab yourself a bottle of pure ammonia to feed the live bacteria and add some to feed(with your master test kit, don't let the ammonia drop to .50 parts per million, but not over 2ppm
Then, go get yourself a bottle of tetra safe start live bacteria to speed up your cycle
Then just keep testing your water and hope for the parameters to go good mine took two weeks, while most can take a month+
Good luck!
