Hopefully someone here can offer me some advise on starting my tank. I we to petco to get the tank the guy knew everything, gave me all the stuff I needed and lots of information about how to start up the 15 gallon tank. Now when I went to get fish I went to super Walmart because it was closer which was a huge mistake the guy knew nothing at all. I got a black moor goldfish and small catfish breed I think it was a pictus. I got them yesterday and today the catfish is already dead! he seemed weird earlier today while swimming sideways and upside and seemed to be struggling. I looked up online and these fish are not even capable for the same tank like the Walmart associate told me! What a dick! Anyway, what can I put with my black moor? And how can I keep him alive better? Is 15 gallons even big even for my moor? I read they need at least 20 gallons now but I really don't want a new tank and really would like at least two fish so they don't get lonely. Any advice at all would be nice thanks:popcorn:

Well, I'm currently in the process of moving my goldfish into a 30 gallon tank. 30 gallons is what most people have said goldfish need. So I definitely wouldn't advice any other fish in the tank. I don't think fish actually get lonely, we just like to think that, but he's fine by himself.

Did you cycle your tank? That might be why your catfish died so quickly. Goldfish like cold water so having other non goldfish fish might not be a good idea. Also, I don't recommend buying live fish from Walmart AT ALL.

Hope this helped, and good luck!

Okay I will order the test kit which that article explains. There is no returning my buddy here so I guess I will have to keep him alone until I get a bigger tank , I used well water as well as "safestart" and had been filtering for a couple days. Coca cola here is less then an inch as a half and he seems healthy and happy right now. Couple more questions though, my tank and heater seems to stay between 72 and 78 degrees is this good or should I add a little cold water each Day to keep it down a little for him? Anyone have a list or site of capable fish? And how about the led lights? Do they like half day of light and half dark like nighttime or does this not matter? Thanks guys !

I believe they like 67-71 degrees Fahrenheit.

K thats what u keep ur goldfish tank at? I will turn off the heater when I'm home since I keep it around 68 in my house

RIP capt Morgan

One thing you may need to know, is that Goldfish produce alot more ammonia than other fish, making them a dirty fish. Not too bad of a problem, unless your planning on getting more.

I don't use a heater in my goldfish tank, but it stays around 71.

Yep I guess I will just have to do water chnges more often. Since cola is still small and young I plan on getting another smaller fancy goldfish as well in the week or two, then in a few months Ill transport them both to a 30 gallon tank and use this 15 gallon for smaller tropical fish. Thanks everyone ill take whatever advice I get!

I am guessing you mean once they grow a bit larger? My moor is only a baby a little over an inch at the moment nose to tail

You honestly should focus on assuring your new friend is safely escorted through the cycling process right now. Fancy goldfish in general do not tolerate uncycled tanks very well so you will need to be very vigilant on your daily testing and frequent water changes (daily or more often) to assure his health and well being. Please do not add anymore fish until you are able to upgrade to a much larger tank that can suitably house two fancies comfortably.

Do you have a decent liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph? What do these numbers read for both your tank and tap water? Using Prime as your water conditioner is suggested to help limit the toxicity of ammonia and nitrite between your water changes. Please ask any questions!

Do not buy your fish at Walmart or listen to anything they tell you please! I once saw chiclids and goldfish mixed together... It just makes me sad
