Java ferns you "plant" just like Anubias ... Tie to driftwood or rocks. They don't need substrate ... roots are f0or anchoring, they take in all nutrients from the leaves.
Swords are rosette plants & are heavy root feeders. I never have luck with them. They seem to need high light to survive. Plus they need root tabs or rich substrate.
You might want to try some crypts or Vals. My goldfish nibble on them from time to time, but not so much that they are totally gone. YMMV! Crypts & Vals will do OK in coarse Gravel. They are not too demanding that way.
