I found a beautiful looking gravel on the Maine coast and thought it would look great in my 44 gallon freshwater tank. I washed it well in fresh water, screened it to get rid of all small particles, then boiled it for at least 15 minutes before leaving it sit in fresh water for several days. I have tested the water it is sitting in and no negative changes in PH, hardness, chlorine, or alkalinity are seen.

Do you think it is safe to use it in the tank???

Thanks & regards

Yep it's probably safe then. If it's not calciferous it should be good in most cases.

While i do enjoy the vinegar test i would also suggest using ph balance on your rocks..a few drops to make sure there is no fizzing. I read somewhere and was told by my lfs that the ph balance actually is better than the vinegar. Just a thought but it seems like your already headed in the right direction and i would love to see some pics of it!
