Oranda not eating Elodea

So I've had my red and white oranda for about two or three weeks now, and I have recently added a zebra nerite snail and elodea to the tank. When I purchased the fish, the shop owner said that the oranda had been on a diet that included elodea, but I didn't have the time or money to go purchase some until a few days ago. I anchored the elodea to the bottom of my tank, but my fish hasn't nibbled at it at all, though he swims through it constantly. Is there some way I can get him to eat it?
