so I have a 72 bowfront I picked up second hand. I moved it, got the filter set up quick and it seems to have survived the move still cycled. I got a day of nitrite spike, did a water change it its back to normal, low ammonia, low(lowest on my test) nitrite and moderate nitrate. I added some salt and a bubbler since I had a little gasping from some of the fish. Cleared that right up.

My question is for servicing the filter. It seems to be working fine(it humms a bit but otherwise ok) The filter media is sponges. I'll be doing a service on it in about 2-3 weeks(wanted to let it full re establish after the move) and want to add charcoal and biobeads like I have in the fluval on my 26gl tank.

Has anyone had experience with the Penn Plax canister filters and can I add charcoal/beads to it?
