In prepping to add some bottom feeders that need cover, I picked up a PVC elbow, cleaned it up, rinsed it off really well and put it in the tank. My pH has gone from 7.8 to 8.2. I did a big water change and its still reading about the same. Is PVC known to do this?

No. PVC should be totally inert. We have multiple tanks with PVC overflows and pvc "caves" and I've never seen the water affected.

How long after your PWC did you test it? What type of test kit? Have you tested your tap after it sitting out?

I tested it 24 hours after the first change and then did another one again last night to find the pH to be the same this morning (API kit). I did use rubbing alcohol to clean up some adhesive on the PVC but rinsed it in hot water and then let it soak for a bit before adding it to the tank.

I'm letting some tap water sit out and I'll check that later.

Rested tap water is testing at 8.0 for ph. Seems things have gone up a bit in my city since I filled the tank. =)
