I'm mulling the purchase of a tank from a local Craigslist seller, but they mention in the ad that the tank has a scratch in the glass. Cosmetically, I don't really care, as I can position it to be all (or mostly) out of sight.

My concern is on the integrity of the glass. I haven't seen the tank yet, and I'm guessing a simple surface scratch won't be a problem, but if it's a deeper gouge/chip, could that present an issue when the tank is filled (uneven stress on the panel, etc)? This is a 90G tank, so it would be a lot of water if it gave out...

What okapi zebra said.
If it is a surface scratch, as deep as you would need to scratch to get paint off a car, etc., then it is fine, but any deeper it isn't worth it. 90 gallons of water + your floor =
$$$$$
