I was given a 5 gallon tank today which has had water sitting in it for a few months. There was no illness in the tank - it just wasn't being used after a Betta died of old age. (The Betta was removed LOL)

I've dis-assembled the tank, soaked the gravel and decorations, and the tank itself in very hot water. (Not boiling).

Should this be enough, or should I disinfect the tank with bleach? I don't want to use bleach unless its really a better idea to.

Thanks!

Gavin

It's probably largely unnecessary. Disinfecting a new tank is largely a peace of mind thing in most cases.

If it were me, I would probably replace the substrate (not unreasonable in smaller tanks), boil any decoration, and bleach the tank. Cleaning a bleached tank w/o any ornaments or substrate is a simply matter of rinsing several times with well Primed water.
