I just learned how sponge filters work. They seem like an interesting option and many people say they are underrated. Can some of you please chime in with some pros and cons? Especially as compared to an HOB like my AC 30.

Pro:
1- They are great at holding beneficial bacteria

Cons:
1- they are horrible looking to the eye in a show tank.

2- They don't help remove particles very well

Great in a nursery tank. The flow is not too great and no risk of fry getting sucked up. Also good for QTs and shrimp tanks ( they feed off the food trapped on the sponge). But they can be unsightly compared with any sort of external filter.
