Of the bettas I've had, the most vicious was female.
One of our LFS locations routinely places male bettas in community tanks with tetras, cories, platies ... Lots of fish. They've been doing it for years now. 20 gallons with lots of fish and a betta. They say 85% of the bettas show no aggression and don't get nipped.
When I go see them I'm struck by how active the bettas are. Zooming around all levels of the tank.
