One news flash for those of us who've been away - Undergravel Filters either with powerheads or those delightful bubbling columns, once the mainstay of contemporary design and function - are no longer cool.
That's funny, I went through the same thing. My last tank was set up in 2000-2001, here I go again 8 years later and I can't even find STAND TUBES!! 4 stores didn't have them, one guy looked at me like I was crazy for wanting to continue to use my UGF. Had to go to local long-term LFS that does just about every tank with UGFs and they basically told me that every method works, you just have to know how to maintain and you're fine.
I decided to stick with my 20-year-old Penn Plax Undertow fitler and power heads that are not quite so old. Mainly because I didn't have the $ to pop for a canister or HOB, but also because I fear change.
As for the cycle, glad you got through yours. I got a bag of dirty water from the same LFS I got the stand tubes from - squeezed out sponge filter, looked like sewage - which is really what you wanted instead of just suctioning the gravel, whoever said 'get gunky water' I'm sure that's what they meant, and whoever said 'bacteria grows on surfaces' that's right, I'm assuming that squeezing out a sponge filter will indeed transfer the bacteria needed.
I had a max 0.5 ammonia (which is just over the tap ammonia around here anyways) and max 0.25 nitrites on 7th day, which dropped to 0.1 2 days later. My cycle was effectively complete in 2 weeks with no fish killing spikes. My tank is 6 weeks old (55 fresh community) and has 29 inhabitants, 3 of which just got moved to a breeder tank (preggers)
Not that any of this helps you now.....
But as a fellow aquarist that learned of the drastic shift from 'UGF is the best!' to 'UGF is soooo last decade!' I would like to hear your thoughts on the subject. I started a thread on this but it has not sparked the interest I had hoped for...
