Hello RAB...

If you've got fish in the tank, then the water needs to be tested daily for traces of ammonia and nitrite. If a test shows a trace of either, then 25 percent of the water needs to be removed and replaced with pure, treated tap water. You simply test the water daily and change it when necessary. When several daily tests show no traces of the above toxins, the tank is cycled.

If it's a fish less cycle, you don't do water changes unless your nitrites are off the charts because it can stall your cycle.

If you've got fish, it's absolutely necessary.
